GBV: Solving The Problems of Voters' Apathy

In an attempt to catch them young, JDPM Oyo embarked on School Outreach on Civic Education and Gender Based Violence (GBV) under the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Program Phase II.

It is believed that many people had withdrawn from participating in election, either as a voter or candidate, due to loss of interest in the electioneering process in Nigeria as a result of either lack of adequate information or a perceived threat to their lives. Without that, people will participate when their rights are being protected, and in a safe environment to make decisions without being coerced.

By so doing, the school outreach program was designed to equip young people, especially those in Secondary Schools, with the right knowledge on their rights as voters and the dangers of Gender Based Violence.

So far, the team has visited ten schools; four private schools and six public schools, with over 600 participants, and greater number of females across two senatorial districts in Oyo State, out of thirty schools earmarked for initial takeoff.

Moreover, apart from equipping the young ones with the knowledge needed, another aim of the program is to ensure that each school adopts the message by creating civic clubs that will enable the students build on what they have learnt in order to foster sustainability.

The message was duly passed across to the students through a short animation with two parts; one on Civic Education and the other on Gender Based Violence.

According to the data acquired during the outreaches, gender-based violence is a common but less obvious human rights violation across homes, workplaces, schools, villages, towns, and metropolitan centers in Oyo State. The majority of these crimes involve harming a person physically, sexually, mentally, emotionally, psychologically, socially, or economically, as a result of socially accepted power disparities between men and women.

The level of acceptance and understanding has been massive so far on the part of the management of the schools and the participating students. This is evident in the level of contributions with openness from the students, especially with the aspect of Gender Based Violence.

After watching and listening, students adjudged the animation to be a ‘bang-on-the-table’ and a self-evident truth that underpins better future. First of its kind in the coverage secondary schools; in the context of promoting active participation in democratic practices, irrespective of gender or class.

Earlier, the team had gotten an approval letter from the State Ministry of Education, and such became a necessity to bring the letter to the Permanent Secretary/Tutor General as included in the letter of approval.

While at the office, some explanations were made on the focus of the school outreach by the advocacy team to Mr. Lawal H.A - the Tutor General.

The team further gave explanations on the imperative of young people’s participation in democratic process, the negative influence of gender-based violence (GBV) on the outcome of an election, and how GBV distorts the benefit of human relations in society.

The Tutor general was highly impressed with the innovation, signed the letter of approval and thereby raised the following suggestions in order to ensure a remarkable success:

1. Evaluation process should be done during and after each program is conducted for each school.
2. The advocacy team as a whole should ensure religious balance throughout the span of the project.
3. The cartoon video should be transcribed and compiled into a pamphlet or handbook and given to the students and teachers.
4. A group of students and teachers should receive training to help them teach other students. This will guarantee the project's sustainability.
5. The vision and mission of JDPM should be streamlined to suit the objectives intended for the program.

The team was elated by the warm reception and immense contributions made by the Tutor General in support of the success of the project.

Tackling the topic of the day from a sociological perspective, the Principal Social Welfare Officer, Oyo,
Mr Abdulkareem Tunde pointed out that most marriages are breaking up because of many factors such as prevalence of adultery/prostitution, abandonment of community extended family system, third party interference, marriage by deceit, economic hardship, greed, poor evaluation of relationships stand point through mutual consent rather than being thoughtful before tying the knot amongst others.

In his presentation, Mr Taiwo Dominic observed that most families abuse their children because they do not believe every child has rights. He added that the laxity of our law in terms of proper discipline for erring parents or guardians gave boost to the ugly trend. Chrism; Rev Fr Adeleke Calls for Unity, Tasks Catholic Faithful on Integrity

Williams Shakespeare in one of his plays, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark; "observed and submitted this about a man: What a piece of work and mystery is a man! How noble in reason, how infinite in faculty. In form and moving how express and admirable! In action how like an angel and in apprehension how like a god"
This sum up the homily of the JDPM Oyo Coordinator and Ave Maria Multipurpose Investment LTD (AMMIL), a microfinance institution of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Rev Fr Gabriel Adeleke during Holy Chrism commemorating the 2021 priestly celebration of parishioners at Our Lady of Assumpta Catholic Cathedral, Asogo, Oyo.

Rev Fr Gabriel Adeleke said what kind of a man is a priest, who is not married yet claimed by many as FATHER, He is a human in every respect but absolves and forgives other humans of their sins. He is not an angel but by few words of consecration, he brings Christ down from heaven and makes people commune with their creator. He, therefore, deserves dignified treatment and respect.

He used literary and biblical allusion to educate the Catholic faithful about how imperfect priests are; yet, they bring much good news of hope for the oppressed and denied themselves of many worldly things to take good care of the sheep in the Lord's vineyard.

"We are here today to celebrate the fulfilment of the solemn promise made by Christ in the gospel of John 14:18) Behold! I will be with you always till the end of time. This promise is being d fulfilled in the priestly ministry and the Holy Eucharist. We gather together for the blessing of the holy oils that are used in the various sacraments during the year".

According to him, "We gather together to renew the promises we all made on the day of our ordination and to ask God for a renewed strength. As we renew our ordination promises dear fathers, the words of the Holy Father Pope Benedict 16th comes to mind in his Holy Thursday Reflection in 2012 where the holy papa said; “Dear friends it is clear that configuration to Christ is the precondition and the basis for all renewal For this same reason, Saint Paul did not hesitate to say to his communities: Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ”.

Rev Fr Gabriel added that while the renewal of priesthood is vital, it is equally important that all priests remain united in spirits with the Lord Jesus Christ who have committed unto the hands of Fathers great commission of winning souls to the heavenly kingdom.

He appealed to the catholic faithful to pray more for their priests and desist from negative criticism, badmouth and condemnation as it affects the body of Christ who has never cease loving the church despite all their iniquities before God.

While appreciating the supports of the congregation, development partners; Kindermissionwerk, Misereor, Missio amongst others in Nigeria and overseas, Fr Gabriel lauds the humanitarian gestures of the church members towards the priests in the diocese with special recognition to the untiring supports of Bishop Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo for the church social organs; JDPM, DON BOSCO Workshop Training Centre, FIDES CARITAS and recently, Ave Maria Multipurpose Investment LTD (AMMIL) who procured four tractors to ease the stress of our farmers in the Diocese.

He further stated that during the peak of the pandemic, AMMIL provided loan facilities without interest for women and youths to ameliorate their pains with the efforts currently ongoing in liaising with the Central Bank of Nigeria to set up a microfinance bank in Iwere-Ile to ease the financial transaction and businesses of people in Oke Ogun region of Oyo State while AMMIL Oyo office will be the Corporate Headquarters as a holding.
Rounding off his homily, Fr Gabriel challenged the congregation with the view of Dom Helder Camara, a Brazilian Catholic Archbishop and one of the great Christian Liberation Theologians who once asked, “why is it that When I feed the poor, they call me Saint, but when I ask why the poor are hungry, they call me a communist” he noted that the same goes to the Nigeria situation where people continue to lament bad leadership when the citizens do not participate actively in politics nor vote during elections. They believe prayers alone will solve our national challenges without doing the right thing by getting involved in the political activities that determine how we are being ruled.

The priest maintained that he agreed with the submission of Bishop Kukah, who said, “In Nigeria, those that come out with the first-class end up becoming Medical Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, etc, those with Second class become Administrator and they rule over the first class, the third class and those with pass end up becoming Politicians and they rule and determine the life of both the first class and second class, then the tout and now in recent time, bandits rule over our lives”.
