RUDEP, ACAI TEAM VISITS SOKU,FOR CASSAVA DEMONSTRATION PLOT HARVESTING

As part of efforts to promote agriculture and rural development in consonance with the global best practices, our Rural Development Programme Department visited Soku, a small farm settlement along Oyo-Iseyin road, Oyo West LGA to supervise the harvesting of cassava varieties on the partnership demo plot of African Cassava Agronomy Initiative (ACAI) Project with the Justice, Development and Peace Movement (JDPM) Oyo

After the harvesting,it was discovered that a section of 10m x 10m which was measured from both plots within the same area produced different yields because the yield for per 10m ? 10m of old practice has 45kg
While yield per 10m ?10m for demo plot weighs 170kg.

It should be noted however that, manual weeding was done thrice on old practice while no weeding was done on the demo plot until harvest took place.

This affirmed the viability of best agronomy practice against the primitive system which has been considered as ineffective for high yield and shortage of profits of farmers.

The Village Head, farmers and other members of the community at the venue appreciated the initiative which has become an eye opener for the farmers to see the importance of agriculture not just as a last resort for those who have lost hope but as a good business that can improve the livelihoods of the people and provide stable food security for the nation

Collaboration: RUDEP Visits IAR&T, NQS, and NIHORT in Ibadan

In a quest for effectiveness and efficiency to encourage sustainable rural and agricultural development in the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, the Rural Development Programme (RUDEP) Department of the Justice, Development and Peace Movement (JDPM) Oyo paid a courtesy visit to some organizations: Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), National Quarantine Service (NQS), National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT) in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital on 9th and 16th October, 2019.

The thrust of the courtesy visitations was to seek collaboration and networking on capacity building of RUDEP staff in the areas of extension services on innovations, improvements and breakthroughs to farmers at the grassroots; proffer advisory services on best ways to tackle Fulani/Farmers conflict, non-availability of Labour force on the farms due to rural-urban migration of the youths and gradual demise of older people who often dominated farming over the years.

The team led by Mr. Ogunnupebi Anthony, Head of Department (RUDEP) says, the department is blessed with experienced staff working with over 51 farmers groups across the selected 19 LGAs of Oyo State and have been complementing the efforts of government in the area of agricultural development without any discrimination or bias for tribe or religion and wishes to intimate the organizations visited about many good works the department have been doing over the years to establish a formidable and cordial relationship.

Welcoming the team to IAR&T, the HOD, Agricultural Extension, Professor (Mrs) Lucy Ogunsunmi says, the institution is well pleased to received RUDEP and look forward to working together on Impact Assessment on farming activities, food value chain and integrated agriculture. On Farmers Led Extension Service (FLES), an idea conceived by RUDEP to train farmers who will assist in training others in their communities best agronomy practice, the Executive Director, IAR&T, Professor (Mrs) Obatola noted that the two organizations could network with each other on standard proposal writing for youth in agriculture by leveraging on Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Enterprise training because they (IAR&T) represent the voice of farmers through ICT, E-Extension, Private Extension adding that, their recent MOu with the apex financial body in Nigeria would boost agricultural activities in the state.

Similarly, the team proceeded to National Quarantine Service (NQS) where critical issues on the prevalence havoc that army worm disease is wrecking on crops, notably cowpea, sugarcane, pea-nut and millet was raised. The disease is said to be responsible for 70-100% of damage to maize crops in tropical Africa. Research shows that army worm damage crops by causing leaves tattering and stunted growth, whorl and death of growing points. It spreads quickly between farms and can wipeout maize production in a state within a short time.

It was suggested that for effective control of army worm, fields should be plough and leaves must be allowed to fallow for at least a week in order to expose the pests to sun heat, there should be regular monitoring of crops fields for pest identification, farmers should use only approved combined insecticides in the evenings at least two weeks after planting; it was also opined that a cultural control of old crop residues on the farm with biological control could also be devised.

"this notorious pest has continue to reduce yield, generate low income to farmers, collapse industries using cereals products, aggravate production cost, lead to loss of jobs especially among poultry farmers because majority of these agribusiness owners are run into loss of billions of naira annually" this must stop !
At the National Horticultural Research Institute(NIHORT), Idi-Ishin, Jericho Reservation Area,Ibadan, the team was received by Deputy Director, Dr Nwakuma E.I who took RUDEP Officers round the departments; Research, Species and Extension services. He said that NIHORT is committed to a standard research that can sustainably improve qualities of fruits, economic trees amongst others in Nigeria, adding that farmers who planted fruits and economic trees must ensure that being an up-takers doesn't mean they could charge higher prices because if the seeds is not viable, the economic returns will be poor and discouraging and if the bio-safety organization do not assess the qualities of such crops, it would amounts to waste of efforts and time since the seed must pass through them.
